As you might guess, this page's track is not a ring: departure and arrival are in different locations. The part reported in this page is from Villach, Austria, to Gemona del Friuli, Italy.
For this reason a means of transport is needed: what we choose for its convenience is the train in Austria direction. In this way you make the return by bike, doing the uphill from Villach to Coccau, about 35 km, and after (quite) all descent up to the end.
The available public transport meeting and departure points are:
⚫ Udine – Train station, Viale Europa Unita. Time 7:00 AM, departure 7:14 AM. Price 13.00€ + 3.50€;
⚫ Gemona – Train station, Viale Roma. Time 7:20 AM, departure 7:32 AM. Price 11.00€ + 3.50€
and arrival to
⚫ Villach Hbf – Main train station, Bahnhofplatz. Time 8:55 AM.
Prices taken from 2016 spring price list. To notice, there is a 20% discount for groups bigger than 6 people. The 3.50€ supplement is related to the bike and it's all day long. The ticket purchase is on board the train.
More information on the Micotra website, such as the time and price documents.
You will descent from the train and saddle up, starting the biking: the technical effort is low, the track does not present obstacles, uphills and slopes and good for everybody, also to not trained ones.
For this reason the track can be split into different stages with different arrivals:
⚫ Villach – Tarvisio: ↑ 250 m; → 35 km; 2:30 hh:mm;
⚫ Tarvisio – Pontebba: ↓ 190 m; → 26 km; 1:30 hh:mm;
⚫ Pontebba – Carnia: ↓ 310 m; → 28 km; 1:30 hh:mm;
⚫ Carnia – Gemona: ↓ 50 m; → 16 km; 0:45 hh:mm;
The stages correspond to the train stations available. The time associated to the stages are supposed assuming an average speed of 10-15 km/h for the whole time, without breaks. So, the total track time is 6:15 hh:mm.
Even if there are several breaking areas, repair and refreshment points along the track - the main ones at Ugovizza and Chiusaforte towns - since the trail's length is suggested to bring a minimum equipment: a backpack with a dress change, food and drink, repair kit.
Alpe Adria begin is at Villach/Villaco (A) city, at the main train station at Bahnhof square.
In a few hundred of meters you cross the main city square and join the Drava River, which you will bike alongside up to its junction with Gail River. Low slopes both at uphill and descent on the dirt road trail belong unforgettable landscapes. To notice, the Highlander cows paddock which you will pass beside.
Again on bike path, now starts the uphill toward Thöl/Coccau countryside, quite all with low slope. You will stay into the woods, where you can see in any case the high Alps peaks, such as the Mangart Mount group, and the Slizza Stream, the unique Italian Danube tributary.
Close to the end of the Austria trail's part you will see the highway passage. Here there is one of the main trip uphill: you will cross the countryside really higher than the motorway passage, going up with some 180 degree turns. Even is the slope is reasonable, it look high with respect to the other ones of this trail.
You notice the passage to Italy due to the small descent along a bike path and some Italian road signals. In addition there is the conifers' height, which are remarkable for their height, the main Tarvisio Forest feature.
Close to Coccau town you find another uphill along secondary tarmac road. Going on toward Camporosso town there are some other uphills, but all with really low slope: the bike path was done on an old railway.
The navigator track has a detour to Alpe Adria bike path at the Tarvisio city center, ideal point for a break. You join again the Alpe Adria bike path soon, traveling about in plain toward Camporosso town, running beside Lussari Mount's North side.
This area is really fine for mountain bike: at Tarvisio town starts the all mountain track Tarvisio - Fusine Lakes - Zacchi Refuge. Proceeding downward through the valley you arrive to the really nice Camporosso town, surrounded by beautiful places such as Bartolo Valley and Lussari Mount, explored by the trails Camporosso - Acomizza Mount, Bartolo Valley - Feistritz a.d. Gail - Acomizza Mount, Bartolo Valley - Ochsenstand Mount and Saisera Valley - Lussari Mount. Where the Canale Valley gets wide you pass beside Malborghetto village, end of the same name valley, amazing for the environment, resources and landscapes granted by the two days trail: Malborghetto - Ciurciule - Cucco Hut. This page track part in Canale and Canal del Ferro Valley is common to the trail Val Dogna - Val Saisera - Alpe Adria.
This Giulie Alps area is the unavoidable ConTOUR FVG part, traveled in the fourth stage and fifth stage.
Over Camporosso village starts the true descent, quite continuous up to the end. You go on along the ex-railway in Canale Valley, surrounded by Rio del Lago, Bartolo, Saisera, Malborghetto Valleys and Jôf Mount group.
The Tarvisio Forest, set in all the valleys just mentioned with a 24'000 hectares area, is the biggest Italian forest, precious for its wide and full wood and fauna system.
At Pontebba town you pass from Canale Valley to Canal del Ferro Valley, traveling now to South direction and not in the valley bottom. The trail moves high, gaining beautiful views: one of the best trail parts. A landscape, tunnels, railway bridges sequence gives you a nice view to the river below.
At Pontebba square you will remember the multi-discipline Pontebba - Cason di Lanza - Creta di Aip departure point. Notable the many waterfalls beside the bike path, in particular the Rio di Pietratagliata one, about in the middle between Dogna e Chiusaforte villages. Not to be missed, the view to Jôf di Montasio Mount from the bridge upon Dogna village. This view is just better from the locations reached during the two days trail Dogna - Agar Mount - Bielìga Saddle.
The descent proceeds over Chiusaforte town, passing over the - accessible from the path - Villanova water source. Over one tunnel there is another ex-railway bridge over Fella River. From its end the bike path is beside the historical "Pontebbana" road - the connection between Venice and Austria, even if far and not too close. This valley is also the connection between Cividale Mounts to Giulie Alps at ConTOUR FVG's fourth stage.
In a few kilometers you arrive to Resiutta village, that has some eateries and is the end of the first part along Alpe Adria, updated at May 15th, 2016.
You pass across the town center and reach after the highway. Follows an about 1 km long tract along Pontebbana road. Even if there are usually a certain number of cars on it, the road is so wide that there are no problems for bikers.
A big left turn point out to be close to Moggio Udinese town: there you turn right, passing along a bridge over Fella River and joining Moggio Basso village, departure of the two days track Moggio Udinese - Vualt Refuge. Soon after getting into the town you turn left, going on along a secondary road beside the river, mainly in plain on the opposite valley side of the main road. At Campeglio village you pass from tarmac to dirt road, which has a good quality and can be run with all kind of bikes.
In a few minute you arrive to the Carnia's Bridge, the fork between Carniche and Giulie Alps. You cross the river again, returning to the East valley side and entering the Carnia village. You get into the village, padding beside the train station. Exiting, you avoid again the main road going on along a new dirt road.
So, you arrive to Portis village. Just a few hundreds of meters along the main road - always wide and comfortable also for bikers. You exit again, proceeding on tarmac road along the Portis Vecchio old village.
Another time on the highway, exiting soon to get into the historical Venzone town.
A break at Venzone is mandatory since the number of historical and uniques places and buildings, such as the cathedral, with its legend, the mummies crypt, the baptistery and the square.
Going out from the town you return to the bike path, recently opened. You proceed quite in plain in the wood up to Rivoli Bianchi - extraordinary landscape point toward Ledis Saddle, begin of the Rivoli Bianchi - Ungarina Hut - Venzonassa Valley descent adventure.
An incoming another small ramp, begin of the last trail descent, which turns around the West Cumieli Mount side. Its East side is reached by the hard dirt road uphill contained by the two days track: Remanzacco - Tanamea Pass - Venzonassa Valley. You arrive fast to Gemona del Friuli town with the Cuarnan Mount upon it, traveled by the trail Gemona - Cuarnan Hut - Foredôr Saddle.
At a 180 degree turn you leave the bike path, passing to the tarmac road and going on straight and in plain, arriving soon to Gemona train station, end of the trail.
The track is about 104 km long. The main part in low slope descent, uphill is about 500 m of elevation gain, quite all in Austria, arriving to Italy borderline.
The track is quite all on bike path, the remaining part is along high quality dirt roads and short steps on tarmac roads, always wide and good also for biking.
The trail facility, location, the crossed and passed by towns number let this track be feasible during spring, summer and autumn. The low technical and physical effort let it be suitable for everybody.
