Path, direction, suggestion

Description

The fifth day is a (quite) rest stage, with the descent from Grego Cabin to Saisera Valley along a path, going on into Tarvisio Forest and arriving to Valbruna town. You proceed on the Alpe Adria international bike path, run Southern the previous day. Arrived to Pontebba town starts the stage ascent toward Cason di Lanza Pass with 1000m of elevation gain. This is the uphill of the stage, which has a 44km length.

Description

Stage starts at Grego Cabin, fourth day arrival point in Saisera Valley direction. Soon after the departure you arrive to a crossroad, about at the begin of the wood. On the left the straight path, on the right the wide path/mulattiera, included in 5th stage track. Pay attention to the junction. The trail has a good bottom quality, high slope at the begin which decreases during descent. At about half descent the wide path becomes a dirt road, arriving fast to the last valley park. For more detail visit the page Dogna Valley - Saisera Valley - Canale Valley; you can see the trail descent on the video Grego Cabin - Saisera Valley.
You go ahead on tarmac road up to Montasio Cabin, where you turn right on a dirt road, crossing the Saisera Stream gravel bed and getting into Tarvisio Forest. This is a small deviation: the forest exit is low hundreds of meters after the previous cabin which you passed beside. If you want you can skip the forest part. In any case it involves no more than 5 minutes without hard technical effort.

In both cases, entering and skipping the forest, you proceed on the main tarmac road toward valley floor, arriving soon to Valbruna town. There are some dirt roads along Saisera Valley but, due to the rain, is not sure that these roads can be feasible: this is way the track is along the tarmac. In any case you can try dirt roads, looking to the maps.
Beyond Valbruna town you join again the Alpe Adria bike path. The valley on the right side, at East, has Camporosso town, starting point of the tracks Camporosso - Acomizza Mount, Camporosso - Bartolo Valley - Acomizza and Bartolo Valley - Ochsenstand Mount. Instead, at West there is the incoming valley part, in descent toward Pontebba town, passage point. The first part is on tarmac road up to close Ugovizza town, where you return to the bike path. You proceed with a slight descent beside Fella River. You pass outside of Malborghetto town - departure of Malborghetto - Ciurciule - Cucco Hut-, Santa Caterina, Bagni di Lusnizza, San Leopondo villages, arriving finally to Pontebba town.

Over the Pontebbana Stream bridge - old Italy-Austria borderline - you arrive to Pontebba square, turning right in North-West direction. Soon after you turn right again, leaving the Pramollo Pass road keeping the one to Cason di Lanza. You will bike with Pontebbana Stream on your right side, reaching soon Studena Bassa village and after Lavaz Bridge: the uphill begin. This is composed by different steps: some "quiet" ones with medium-low slope, and some high slope ones. These are not always done by turn series but also by straight and slope lanes. Particularly, this happens in the second half of the uphill, where the road direction turns from East-West to South-North. First you climb to Carbonarie place, passing beside Rio Secco Hut, arriving after to the 180 degree turns of La Busatte village. This is the most steep uphill part. At the end of the curves you will find the Caserute Hut ruins. The road proceeds with lower slope, which increases closer to the arrival at Cason di Lanza Pass. The ascent from Pontebba to Cason di Lanza is common to the track Pontebba - Cason di Lanza - Creta di Aip, which explores the environments above Cason di Lanza, moving after forward to Creta di Aip Mount peak along the Creta Rossa climbing path: a multi-discipline trail.

The steep stage parts are rewarded by the landscape at Cason di Lanza, where you can see Zermula Mount, 2143m, and Creta di Aip Mount, 2279m. Their stone sides are above woods and fields. Particularly, the main and nice attraction is Pian di Lanza, some lawns on the plateau above Cason di Lanza in front of Creta di Aip Mount. The lawns can be reached along the dirt road to Val Dolce Hut and Aip Hut. Both peaks beside Cason di Lanza are joined by MTBfriuli. Creta di Aip peak is reached through a single day by bike, trekking and climbing: Pontebba - Cason di Lanza - Creta di Aip. The Zermula Mount involves two days, still keeping the multi-discipline approach: Paularo - Cason di Lanza - Monte Zermula - Zuc della Guardia.

In good conditions at the begin, onward in the gravel bad is not always accessible. This is the reason why it was skipped by ConTOUR FVG.

The low part of the dirt road is always accessible, keeping it at Montasio Cabin.
